HPV warts, also knows as genital warts are caused by multiple subtypes of the human papillomavirus. HPV is transmitted by skin to skin contact during sexual activity. The most common manifestations of an infection with HPV is the appearance of genital warts. Although some subtypes are responsible for the development of cervical cancer, the 6 and 11 subtypes most commonly associated with genital warts are not. HPV is extremely is extremely common with up to 50% of all sexually active people contracting it at some point.
The key to the treatment and management of HPV warts is early detection and elimination. In the early stages, small warts can be treated with topical medications or office based cautery and cryotherapy. Large and more advanced HPV warts require more extensive surgical resection or CO2 laser ablation in the operating room. With early treatment and management, visible HPV warts can be eliminated allowing the body's natural immune response to suppress any virus that remains.
