Miami urologists David Robbins, MD and Amery Wirtshafter, MD are board certified urologists specializing in the surgical management for complex male penile conditions such as Peyronie's Disease. Dr. Robbins and Dr. Wirtshafter are among a small and select group of physicians in Miami, Fort Lauderdale and the surrounding region approved to offer patients Xiaflex, the first FDA approved medication with clinical efficacy for the treatment of Peyronie's Disease.
Peyronie's Disease is an acquired condition reported to affect up to 5% of men characterized by chronic inflammation of the capsule of the erectile bodies of the penis knows as the tunica albuginea. Scar tissue forming in the tunica albuginea of the corpora cavernosum results in the formation of a plaque which can cause the penis to bend or curve. Peyronie's also can cause pain and discomfort, loss of length or shortening, loss of girth and erectile dysfunction.
The cause of Peyronie's Disease is not known but is commonly believed to result from trauma likely during sexual interactions resulting in inflammation of the corporal tissues and subsequently the formation of Peyronie's plaques. Although all men may be affected by Peyronie's disease, it is more commonly seen in men with other soft tissue inflammatory conditions such as Dupuytren's contractures of the hands.
Peyronie's disease is diagnosed by the clinical presentation of a man with curvature of the penis with or without discomfort and a palpable plaque along the corporal bodies.
Peyronie's can cause varying degrees of curvature from a slight nearly imperceptible bend to a nearly 90 degree angle making intercourse impossible. Without intervention, approximately 10% will spontaneously improve, 40-50% will worsen and the rest will remain clinically unchanged.
There have been many studies performed evaluating oral treatments and supplements for the treatment of Peyronie's Disease including Vitamin E and Potaba, but none have any proven efficacy.
Intalesional injections with calcium channel blockers such as verapamil have been used with mixed result.
Miami urologists David Robbins, MD and Amery Wirtshafter MD are excited to be able to offer patients the first FDA approved medication with proven efficacy for the treatment of Peyronie's Disease.
Xiaflex is approved for adult men with a plaque and curvature of the penis greater than 30 degrees at the start of treatment. Xiaflex is a collagenase medication which results in breakdown of the Peyronies plaque significant clinical improvement in curvature.
Call today to schedule an appointment to meet with Miami urologists David Robbins, MD or Amery Wirtshafter MD to learn more about the treatment of Peyronie's Disease and to see if you may be a candidate for Xiaflex treatment.
